Until this release, I had never looked twice at anything from Por Larranaga. The name is too difficult to get right. Wannabe aficionados pretend to know how to pronounce it, but if they were being truthful, they have no more idea than I do.

The band of this cigar is really sexy. It has a very classy gold sheen, with raised lettering. Giving any cigar with the band automatic status.

The word I’d use to describe this cigar is “rustic”. Like Havana itself. It has a very blue collar outer leaf that doesn’t present glamour. The triple cap seems crude as well.

Construction:

From start to finish, I thought this cigar was very genuine. The taste was a cross between a Partagas Solomones, and a Cohiba Robusto. Not smooth at all, but not harsh at the same time. Hard to describe the interesting conflict in flavor. The cigar stayed lit, and burned somewhat evenly.

Taste:

As I said, a very genuine smoke. I had to drink coca cola to take the bite off my tongue as I smoked this cigar. I was reminded of butter, salt, and leather for the majority of this cigar.

Over all, I liked the cigar. I would have to be honest and say I would not buy a box of 25. But to mix it up, I would love to have this cigar every so often.

I was in Havana for a long weekend with buddies when a friend told me I needed to try this cigar. I was staying in Vedado, so the closest Habanos shop was in the Melia Cohiba hotel. Luckily, the shop has a bar and lounge attached. At almost 20 cuc per stick, this cigar better be good. Anything less than excellent would have been considered a failure. We sat down and everyone ordered drinks. I always love a coke or capuccino with my cigars, some guys like scotch, rum, etc… The sugar cuts some of the bite a strong cigar puts on your tongue.

Presentation:

Big, imposing, yet very elegant. A dark brown wrapper, smooth and oily. This cigar is sexy. It has a musky, sweet scent to it that gives you an idea of what is to come. Holding this cigar feels like sitting in the driver’s seat of a Ferarri. The only people who are not jealous are the other guys holding the same cigar.

Construction:

There is a great deal of skill that goes into rolling a cigar like this. For starters, it’s a limited edition, but more than that, this is a special cigar. Even among the Habanos line, it stands out as something not everyone gets to have. Dark blackish brown outer leaf, clean cut, triple cap at the drivers end.

Taste:

As I said, you already know before you light it it is going to be more than just a cigar. As you gather the cutter, lighter, and your favorite beverage in a form of four-play, you finally get to sit back and put fire to leaf. The predraw gives a hint of spice, but once you light it, it is all heavy cream. It lights easily for such a big cigar. The initial draws are a brilliant combination of roasted coffee, cream, dare I say cinnamon, and soft leather. Almost velvet. About five minutes in, the smoke maintains the heavy cream, coffee taste, but gets a little nutty. The draw on this smoke was nothing less than perfect in its resistance. This cigar is a master piece of flavor. It gradually becomes stronger, like hot tub water slowly getting to the right tempeture. Mouthful after mouthful of delicious coffee, cream, nuts, and leather impress you more and more. The burn is a little stubborn, but it is a small price to pay for such a quality smoke.
This isn’t a cheap cigar, but a cigar like this should be copared with kobe beef, Louis 13 cognag, or a Ferrari. You are getting the very best, and it is slightly more expensive than cigars of far lowere quality.

Try this cigar.

The Monte 4 falls between my two main preferences. I generally prefer either a very large ring guage, or a shorter cigar to give me a fix until I have more time to relax. This stick is neither of them.

Presentation:

There is nothing special about the appearance of this cigar. It actually looks very plain and ordinary. The Colorado outer leaf is smooth, not really oily, nor does it have any type of sheen that would attract the unknowing smoker.

Construction:

The construction of the Monte 4 is unassuming. Very modest, played down band. But fundamentally a very well build cigar. It usually is a bit firm to the touch. I would say this firmness is deceptive of how it smokes.

Taste:

For the size of this cigar, it is deceptively strong. Full flavor comes from an abundant amount of smoke it provides for a small cigar. Dry, woody and just a little cream, almost salty. Lush is the word I would use to describe the way the first third smokes. It is still a medium smoke at this point.

As this cigar burns down to begin the second third, it starts to smoke a little warmer. It starts to get a little sweet as the nicotine concentrates into the remaining tobacco and creates a spicy bite on the tip of your tongue. I had to correct the burn just a little at this point, as it was starting to run. I never have very good luck with corrections, as it usually continues and distracts me from the smoke in my hand.
The third section is more distinct. It gets a little hot, but that may be due to the corrections I’ve made, or over compensated. This cigar finishes well, despite thise inconveniences.

As I said, it’s a good smoke, but not much to my taste and the way I enjoy cigars.

The Partagas 2 is as classic as it gets. It demands respect as both a full flavor cigar, and a well built frame that makes it easy to smoke.

Presentation:

If I have to pick a word to desribe this cigar, it would be rustic. It has a dark tan outer leaf, a few very neat veins, and an amazing draw. The Partagas 2 has a nice sexy wrapper that is both oily, with that tobacco ‘dust’ that you find on great cigars. It’s pyramid shape makes it feel great in your hand, and it’s large 52 ring guage makes sure you’ll have plenty of smoke to occupy you in the process. When I cut this cigar and tested the draw, I was greeted with cocoa and cedar. A very dry, very mellow cigar.

Construction:

This is a very wel built cigar, as I lit it, it took to the fire and produced and nice, even round orange start. At no point during the process did I need to correct the burn. The fullness of the flavor and eveness of the draw give you enough smoke that you don’t find yourself wanting more. Therefore, you can sit back and relax and enjoy this classic without worries. The last one I smoked was a little bit on the loose side concerning the draw. But not anywhere near loose enough that would make it burn too quickly. Once I cut it, the wrapper held intact and I did not need to adjust anything.

Taste:

The word Partagas to me is associated with a certain flavor cigars normally come in. Aside from the Salomones, most Partagas cigars I have smoked have a distinct taste, much like the Bolivar. This cigar is potent with it’s smoke output and nicotene content. It has that peppery zesty flavor mixed with a little salt that makes for a very distinct taste.This cigar was no different.

I would have to say that the Partagas flavor is an aquired taste, but once you aquire it, it stays with you.

The first third gives you a heavy cloud of rich blue smoke, filled with that Habanos trademark flavor. I was able to draw effortlessly and get very thick mouthfulls of smoke. What a treat. The cocoa and leather notes become more pronounced as you near the end of the first third. The second third it stayed dry and gave me the beginings of a dry spell. A good dry spell. This cigar is a classic because it is consistent. As the second third came to a close, the smoke slowly became more and more peppery and salty. The massive amount of smoke that had poured through this cigar in the first two thirds were starting to alter the flavor of the last third. As the smoke began to get very spicy and a little less sweet.

I keep saying I’m going to make this cigar one of the utility smokes in my humidor, but I keep putting it off. Hopefully, you won’t…

The Genios is a respectably sized cigar. With a 52 ring and just shy of the length of the Siglo 6. It has a dark and oily outer leaf and almost looks too exotic to smoke in regular rotation. The Siglo 6 is my favorite cigar, so this Maduro isn’t a big jump from what I’m used to. I would compare it to having a dark chocolate treat when you’ve been on a diet of milk chocolate.

For starters, the Box is damn sexy. A fine black lacquer finish. When you open it, you see the elegant dark, oily cigars lined up with the flush Cohiba logo, with a slight twist. This cigar is definitely for show and tell at your local smoke shop. It’s like pulling up in a new porsche.

Before you even light this cigar, the expectations are high from a packaging stand point. As sexy as it looks, it needs to deliver well to not disappoint. Fortunately, it does deliver. It’s pretty different than pretty much anything in the Cohiba line. But still quite elegant.

The pepper and spice are immediately present when you light it. It gives you a mouth full of strong, spicy smoke. This cigar isn’t for amateurs. It generally burns smoothly and evenly. Not too much of a kick, yet full body.

You always have to be cautious when a cigar is this full from the start. A shot of pepper and heavy wood are the first impressions it delivers. As the smoke burns, it gives you a peppery chocolate taste, keeping the earthy body the whole time. It doesn’t really get too over bearing as you would think a cigar that starts off so strong would. It mellows out about a third of the way down and stays complex until it gets down to the last part of the cigar, then it gets intense. Like I said, this is way too complicated of a cigar to smoke every day. I prefer to rotate it into a steady diet of medium cigars, or to treat myself when some event in life has gone my way.

This cigar is not cheap. Just as well, as the specialness would be ruined if you smoked it too often. What I really like about this cigar is that it improves quite a bit the longer you let it sit in your humidor. It seems the rest takes a little of the punch out and it becomes smoother, more mellow, and more depth to it.

Habanos has rarely had a Maduro that has done well long term the same as the Maduro 5 series. Usually, Habanos launches Maduros as a limited edition. But this cigar is a nice addition to the Cohiba line, as well as Habanos as a whole.

Because of the price point, and the strength of this cigar, and depending on your situation, this is the perfect share box to split up with a few buddies.

The Churchill lights well, taking an even burn and a full, smooth first pull in the process. The draw gives the perfect amount of resistance, not too much work, not too much air. The fragrance leaf really comes out as you get under way. Giving you a very distinct flavor at the exactly precise amount of labor involved with a nice smoke. The aroma is a very particular citrus, mixed with leather.

It gets started very light; almost giving you the idea it will be an unfulfilling smoke. The amount of smoke it gives you seems almost filtered.
